Flanagan: Open border is a must post Brexit

The Irish Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Charlie Flanagan has told BBC Hardtalk that there must be no hard border with Northern Ireland after Brexit and an open border “is a must in all circumstances”.

Speaking on Thursday, Mr Flanagan said an open border has been critical to "peace on the island of Ireland".

The European Union's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, will visit the Irish border region on Friday. He has emphasised there will have to be some form of customs control as a result of Brexit but will work to avoid a hard border.

The British and Irish governments have both said they do not want a return to customs posts on the border.
