Putin lays flowers next to body of Mikhail Gorbachev

Vladimir Putin has laid flowers at the coffin of the Soviet Union's last leader, Mikhail Gorbachev.

Ahead of his funeral, Mr Putin placed red roses beside Gorbachev's body that was being held in an open coffin.

The tribute was held at the Moscow hospital where he died on Tuesday.
