Archibald Knox joins Bee Gees in blue plaque honour

A commemorative blue plaque has been unveiled at the former Douglas home of artist and jewellery designer Archibald Knox.

Douglas Council said the honour had been bestowed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Working for London store Liberty & Co, Knox established himself as the foremost designer in the Art Nouveau movement.

A recent piece sold at Hampstead Auctions for £42,000 and his work still inspires jewellers and artists.

Anthony Bernbaum, from the Archibald Knox Society, said: "There's only one other British silversmith of any century that can command that price, he's at the top in silver by any measure of any generation of designer."

It is just the second blue plaque to be awarded by Douglas Borough Council, who also recognised the Bee Gees last April.
