Ecuador declares state of emergency

There have been chaotic scenes in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, as the police have taken to the streets, protesting against austerity cuts.

President Rafael Correa was stunned by a tear gas canister and as the protests continued, the president was holed up in a hospital hiding from the police.

Messages of support have come from leaders around the world. Washington said it was closely following the situation and in Brussels, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, called for calm and expressed support for Ecuador's government.
