Clashes in a Peruvian town over mining project

The authorities in Peru have arrested the mayor of Espinar province, Oscar Mallohuanca, after more than a week of protests against a copper mine project run by a Swiss company Xstrata.

It is believed that the mayor is one of the leaders of the demonstrations, which have turned violent.
