Children celebrate their international day around the world

Children in Colombia and China celebrated their International Day with activities that included touring the presidential palace in Bogota and playing with the president Ju Hintao in Beijing.

In many countries, such as North Korea, Russia, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Cuba and Bulgaria, 1 June is observed as the day to honour children and to promote its rights and welfare.

In 1954, the General Assembly of the UN recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day in the way which each considers appropriate.

Some countries celebrate it on 20 November, the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989.
