Powerful earthquake rocks Costa Rican capital San Jose

A massive earthquake has shaken the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The US Geological Survey said the quake, with a magnitude of 7.6, was centred about 80km from the town of Liberia.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. A tsunami warning was issued for extensive areas along the western edge of central and south America.

Speaking to Radio 4's PM programme seismologist Dr Roger Musson said Costa Rica is one of the most quake-prone countries.
