Spontaneous street parties make a comeback at Rio Carnival

Street parties at the Rio Carnival have for a long time been eclipsed by professional samba schools competing in parades at the Sambadrome.

But in the past few years free, informal and spontaneous street celebrations have started to regain their momentum.

The official street carnival will this year conclude on Wednesday, 13 February, but the celebrations are set to carry on for a few more days.
