Is Peru's war on drugs working?

Peru has become the world's main grower of coca leaves - the raw ingredient for cocaine.

According to a report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, coca plantations in Peru covered 60,400 hectares last year.

The previous top producer was Colombia, where crop eradication programmes have been successful.

The Peruvian government is running an eradication programme, cutting down coca plants, and blowing up illegal airstrips and cocaine production sites.

But critics say this is all for show - and that the government and officials are benefitting from the drugs money pouring in to the country.
