Frida Kahlo: Why Mexico's elite still shun the artist

This month marks the 75th anniversary of the celebrated Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's first solo exhibition in New York. It was a show that set her on the path to international renown.

But back in her homeland, recognition of Kahlo's talents and her adoption as a national icon were slow to come. Even today, many in Mexico's wealthy elite are said to be loath to embrace an artist who celebrated the culture of ordinary Mexicans.
