Floods swamp north Peru after Piura river bursts its banks

Deadly floods have swamped northern Peru after the Piura river burst its banks.

Four people drowned after water levels rose as high as 1.80 (5ft 9in), while in the town of Catacaos, residents sought safety on their rooftops.

Gen Jorge Chavez of the National Emergency Operations Centre said the rains had been the heaviest in almost a decade.
