Argentina Milei: Thousands protest against austerity plans
Thousands took to the streets of Buenos Aires, despite threats of a crackdown on demonstrators, in the first major protest against President Javier Milei’s economic policies.
Deep spending cuts and a 50% devaluation of the Argentine peso were among a slew of drastic measures announced last week.
Mr Milei won the presidential election in November, off the back of a campaign centred around economic reform.
The country has been plagued by spiralling inflation and increasing poverty.
