UN ceasefire deadline passes in Syria

The UN deadline for a complete ceasefire in Syria has passed.

So far, activists say there are no reports of major violence.

The international community is paying close attention to the situation, hoping that its efforts will bring a permanent halt to the bloodshed.

Anti-government groups have said that if the government abides by the truce, then they will too.

The Syrian government promised to stop military operations by the deadline, but said it would respond to attacks by what it called armed terrorist groups.

The BBC's Wendy Urquhart reports.
