Syria unrest: Violence flares ahead of UN vote

There has been renewed fighting in Syria ahead of a UN General Assembly vote to condemn its own failures to put an end to the unrest.

Rebel positions in the city of Aleppo have been shelled by government forces, and there has been bloodshed in Hama and Damascus.

The vote follows the resignation of UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan as he admitted the failure of his six-point peace plan.
