Israel: UN vote on Palestine 'political theatre'

Israel has dismissed the UN vote to upgrade the status of Palestine to a non-member observer state as a "piece of negative political theatre" that will "hurt peace".

The Palestinians can now take part in UN debates and potentially join bodies like the International Criminal Court.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said this was the "last chance to save the two-state solution" with Israel.

However, Mark Regev, spokesman for Israel's PM, told the BBC the move had taken Palestinians and Israelis out of a negotiating process.
