Afghan officials brand UK detention 'inhuman'

The Afghan Ministry of Defence has demanded that Britain hands over Afghan nationals it is holding in Camp Bastion in Helmand.

General Zahir Azimi said it was against Afghan law that the men were still being held, branding their detention "inhuman".

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed that British forces are detaining 80 to 90 Afghan nationals, but said their release would put British troops at risk.

UK lawyers acting for eight of the men said they had been held for up to 14 months without charge in what could amount to unlawful detention.
