Syria rebels 'take key air base'

Syrian rebel fighters have captured a military airbase in the north of the country near the Turkish border, according to opposition activists.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said rebels took Menagh airport early on Tuesday.

Rebels have also taken several villages in Latakia province, the heartland of President Assad's minority Alawite sect.

The BBC's Jim Muir, reporting from Lebanon, says Menagh airport is not "hugely significant strategically" but its capture means they now completely control the area.
