Syrian migrants rescued from boat off Italy coast

Italian coastguards have rescued more than 120 Syrian migrants from a boat adrift in stormy seas off the southern coast.

Those on board were following a route that brings thousands of African and Arab migrants fleeing war and poverty every year to what they hope will be better lives in Europe.

Hundreds of people died in two separate disasters in October, when boats carrying migrants sank off the Italian coast.

Alan Johnston reports.
