Archive footage shows Aleppo before the destruction
Aleppo was once described as "the jewel of Syria" - one of the world's oldest inhabited cities, it was home to more than 2,000,000 people and featured on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
However, the city and its people have been devastated by fighting between government troops and rebels.
This BBC archive footage from the 1990s shows the city before the destruction: In stark contrast to today, the streets are teeming with people; construction work is under way and tourists are flocking to the Citadel.
