UN spokesman: Some trapped Yazidi 'extracted'

The United Nations says some of the thousands of people trapped by the Islamic State group (IS) have been rescued.

Up to 50,000 members of the Yazidi religious minority fled into mountains near the town of Sinjar, after the militant group overran the area.

There are fears the people still in the mountains could starve without swift action - access is currently impossible because militants control the area.
