'They try to jump into the helicopters'

A volunteer Yazidi relief worker, who travels on an Iraqi Air Force helicopter which drops food and water and evacuates refugees trapped in the Sinjar mountains in northern Iraq, has described the situation as "a genocide", with what looks like hundreds of dead people among those fleeing from Islamic State fighters.

Mirza Dinnay told the Today programme's Mike Thomson that one man had died after falling from the helicopter after clinging to it as it took off.

The helicopter makes two trips a day, he said, taking bread and water to the refugees and bringing out as many as 20 evacuees each time. Mr Dinnay was speaking on a poor quality phone line, and his words have been revoiced.
