US air strikes target Islamic State in Syria

The United States and allies have launched the first air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, the Pentagon has said.

Jordan has confirmed that it was involved in the mission. Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are also understood to have "participated in or supported" it.

The US has launched 190 air strikes in Iraq since August but the latest action expands the campaign against the militant group across the national border into Syria.
