Satellite images show Palmyra temple destruction

The United Nations has released a satellite photo taken over Syria that appears to show that the Temple of Bel in the ancient city of Palmyra has been destroyed.

There had been reports of an explosion at the Temple of Bel in Palmyra, which is held by militants from Islamic State (IS).

Einar Bjorgo, manager of the UN satellite programme, said the image confirmed that the main building, as well as a line of stone columns that stood beside it, had been destroyed.
