Herat hit by Taliban attacks

Taliban militants in Afghanistan have attacked a Nato base in the western city of Herat. Suicide bombers are reported to have detonated a car bomb, while other attackers tried to enter the compound.

Earlier, there was an attack in the centre of the city, killing at least five people and wounding thirty others.

Herat is one of the seven areas due to be handed over to Afghan military control in July.

The BBC's Paul Wood reports from Kabul.
