Giffords shot in head while meeting constituents

An American congresswoman has been critically injured in a mass shooting which has left five people dead, including a nine year old child and a federal judge.

Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat, was shot at point blank range as she spoke to voters outside a local supermarket in Tucson, Arizona.

The gunman, who was armed with an automatic weapon, has been arrested.
