On 30 March 1981, just 69 days into his presidency, Ronald Reagan became the victim of an assassination attempt.
President Reagan was leaving the Washington Hilton hotel when he and three others were shot and wounded by John Hinckley, Jr.
Reagan suffered a punctured lung in the shooting, but survived. White House press secretary James Brady, a secret service agent and a District of Columbia police officer were all wounded.
