Polar bear and cub awake in 'building site'

A polar bear and her cub emerged from hibernation on a remote Alaskan island, to find an oil company construction site over their snowy den.

Workers on the new site for Italian oil firm Eni saw the bears on 18 March on Spy Island, a man-made island in the Beaufort Sea, north of Prudhoe Bay.

The company contacted the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which sent up a biologist to analyze the situation and set up a remote camera.

Work was suspended for a few days and resumed with the government's approval three days after the bears had left the area.
