NYPD defends clearing of Occupy protest in Zuccotti Park

A New York court has ruled that a pre-dawn clearance of the Occupy Wall Street camp in Manhattan was legal.

The ruling means protesters will remain barred from setting up tents and sleeping in the park.

Police arrested around 200 people in a surprise pre-dawn raid on Zuccotti Park.

Deputy Commissioner of Public Information for the New York Police Department, Paul Browne, told the BBC that the police acted ''even handedly'' in the face of resistance.
