Delta Airlines plane makes emergency landing after bird strike

A Delta Airlines plane has made an emergency landing at New York's John F Kennedy airport after an apparent bird strike.

Flight 1063, which was bound for Los Angeles with 172 passengers and seven crew onboard, contacted air traffic control shortly after take-off when the right engine failed.

Passengers described a loud bang, a grinding noise and the plane shaking, before the cabin filled with smoke.

ABC's Leanne Suter reports.
