Shot US congresswoman Giffords calls for tighter gun laws

There have been renewed calls for tighter gun controls in the US.

Former US congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head during a mass shooting two years ago.

She returned to Washington on Wednesday to appear before a congressional committee looking at the issue of gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, in which 20 children were killed.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, three people were injured in a shooting in Phoenix, Arizona.
