Over half of Guantanamo Bay's detainees join hunger strike
A spokesman for the US military has said that 84 of the 166 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are now on hunger strike, but none have life-threatening conditions.
The action began in early February in protest at conditions, and what the inmates fear could be indefinite confinement.
The US opened the detention facility in January 2002 to hold suspects captured in counter-terrorism operations after the 11 September 2001 attacks in the US.
About 800 prisoners have been held there since then, many without trial.
