European Parliament chief 'shocked' by US spying claims

The president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, has said he is "deeply shocked" by allegations that US intelligence services have been spying on EU offices.

A report in Germany's Der Spiegel magazine claims key offices in the US and Europe were bugged.

Journalists at the publication said the information was leaked to them by fugitive ex-CIA analyst Edward Snowden.

Mr Schulz said: "I am deeply shocked because I think the United States should treat the European Union not like an enemy."
