US weather: 1,000 mile-wide storm hits Deep South

A rare winter storm that stretches 1,000 miles has hit the Deep South of the US.

Hundreds of road accidents have been reported, with at least two people killed. School children were stranded at school overnight, while in a separate incident, a school bus flipped over on an icy road.

The National Guard had to be called in to help rescue people stranded by the weather - which would be expected in northern states but is unusual in the south.

ABC's Marci Gonzalez reports.
