Japan PM Abe's 'deep repentance' over WW2 role

In a speech to a joint session of the US Congress, the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, has expressed deep remorse for Japan's aggression during the Second World War.

In the first such address by a Japanese prime minister, Mr Abe said his country could not avert its eyes to what it had done.

He received warm applause when he offered his condolences for the Americans who died in the war and admitted Japan had caused suffering to the peoples of Asia.
