Flight death: US co-pilot's call to control tower

A pilot on an overnight flight from Phoenix to Boston is believed to have died of a heart attack.

The American Airlines flight landed safely when the co-pilot took over the controls and diverted the plane to Syracuse, New York.

In a call to the control tower the first officer can be heard saying the captain was "incapacitated".

After the flight made a safe emergency landing, passengers who had been on board spoke of their shock.
