Oliver! and the plight of modern homelessness
The musical Oliver! is one of the staples of holiday entertainment - a hungry orphan asks for more and ends up with a home and a family.
In a new production opening at Arena Stage in Washington this week, the happy ending is still there. But there's also a bleak message about child exploitation and homelessness.
As Jane O'Brien finds out, things haven't improved much since the original novel by Charles Dickens first appeared in 1837.
