Can the West 'undo' mistakes made in Libya?

The United States and other world powers said they are ready to supply arms to Libya's new unity government to help in the fight against so-called Islamic State. The proposal will need to be approved by the UN Sanctions Committee before it can be carried out.

US Secretary of State John Kerry called the plan of arming the government backed forces while trying to stop extremists from getting weapons a "delicate balance."

Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Adm James Stavridis, now the Dean at the Fletcher School at Tufts University, said this is an opportunity for the international community to go back to Libya. "By engaging with this government at this early, very nascent stage, we can begin to undo the mistakes we made as a global community walking away from Libya," he told the BBC's Laura Trevelyan.
