White House says Vladimir Putin's threat is 'irresponsible'

White House official John Kirby says the US is taking Vladimir Putin's veiled threat to use nuclear weapons seriously, though the US has seen no indication of any need to change its strategic deterrent posture for now.

The National Security Council spokesman said: "It's irresponsible for a modern nuclear power to be talking about the modern use of nuclear weapons in that way."
