Beastie Boys, Alice Cooper and Bon Jovi were among the 15 acts who have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year.
Rapper LL Cool J, Neil Diamond, Donna Summer, Darlene Love and Chuck Willis, were also in the shortlist.
More than 500 people from the US music industry will vote to select the inductees, who will be announced in December.
The induction ceremony will take place in March in New York.
Also on the shortlist were British folk singer Donovan, Chic, Dr John, J. Geils Band, Laura Nyro, Joe Tex and Tom Waits.
"We believe our nominating committee has put forth a list of artists that truly represents the wide variety of music that defines rock and roll," president of the the Fame Foundation Joel Peresman said.
To be eligible for nomination, acts must have released their first single or album at least 25 years prior to the nomination year.
The 2011 nominees all released their first recording no later than 1985.
