Actor Rip Torn admits bank break-in

Torn won an Emmy in 1992 for his role in The Larry Sanders Show

Actor Rip Torn has admitted breaking into a bank while drunk and carrying a loaded gun.

He was arrested in January after police found him inside the Bancorp branch in Litchfield, Connecticut.

The 79-year-old pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and the illegal carrying of a firearm.

The Men In Black actor was given a two-and-half year suspended sentence and three years of probation.

Conditions of the sentence include a ban on possessing guns as well as random drug and alcohol tests.

Prosecutors had said Torn was so intoxicated that he believed he was at home and had left his hat and boots by the door.

A lawyer for Torn said the actor was thankful no-one had been injured in the incident and that he had been spared a jail term.

The actor - real name Elmore Rual Torn - won an Emmy in 1992 for his role in US sitcom The Larry Sanders Show.

In 1984 he was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for his role in Cross Creek, a film about US author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
