Tamara Rojo appointed to English National Ballet role

Tamara Rojo said she aims to build the ENB's place in the regions

Spanish dancer Tamara Rojo has been appointed artistic director of the English National Ballet (ENB).

Rojo, who was formerly a principal dancer with the company, will take up her post in September with the announcement of the 2013 season.

The 37-year-old is also expected to continue in a performing capacity as part of her role and act as a director.

The prima ballerina takes over from Wayne Eagling, who was in the post for seven years .

Rojo is currently the principal dancer at the Royal Ballet and sits on board of various arts organisations including the Institute of Contemporary Arts and Dance UK.

She said she is "honoured" to take up the directorship, and would consider expanding the company's work into other art forms.

"I am particularly excited about working with young British choreographers and building strong relationships with our audiences in the regions," she added.

ENB chairman John Talbot said that Rojo will "develop, mentor and showcase young talent within the company, and build the profiles of those who are already performing at the highest level."

Rojo was born in Canada to Spanish parents and moved back to Spain at an early age, where she danced until relocating to the UK in 1996.

She was a critical success, being named the "dance revelation of the year" by the Times after her performance in The Nutcracker.
