Sweeney Todd gets three Theatre Awards UK nominations

The West End run of Sweeney Todd ended on 22 September

A revival of Sweeney Todd has earned three Theatre Awards UK nominations.

The production, which starred Michael Ball as the demonic barber and Imelda Staunton as the pie-making Mrs Lovett, recently ended a run in the West End.

Both Ball and Staunton are nominated for best performance in a musical, while the Stephen Sondheim-created show is up for best musical production.

The awards, to be handed out next month, honour the best regional theatre from around the UK.

Directed by Jonathan Kent, Sweeney Todd transferred to London in March after a successful run at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2011.

Also nominated in the best musical production category are the Sheffield Crucible staging of Sondheim's Company and The Go-Between, at West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Nominated for best new play are Lungs by Duncan MacMillan, seen at the Crucible Studio, Sheffield; South Downs by David Hare, seen at Chichester Festival Theatre; and In The Next Room by Sarah Ruhl, a Theatre Royal Bath production.

This year the awards include a public vote for best touring production, The nominated shows are Anne Boleyn, The King and I, Reason To Be Cheerful, Swallows and Amazons and We Are Three Sisters.

Presented by the Theatrical Management Association (TMA), the winners of the Theatre Awards UK 2012 will be announced on 28 October at the Guildhall in London.

Last year's winners included Matilda the Musical, Sir Derek Jacobi and Michael Sheen for his Port Talbot staging of The Passion.
