Box office hit School Of Rock is to be turned into a stage musical by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Speaking to CBC radio, Lord Lloyd Webber said he acquired the theatrical rights to Richard Linklater's 2003 film starring Jack Black.

The composer said he was "very excited" about the project and would consider composing songs for the play.

"There may be songs for me in it, but it's also got songs in it as it stands," he said.

Jack Black stars in the film as a rocker who poses a substitute teacher and attempts to turn his class into a band.

The film featured songs from AC/DC, Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Black Keys, The Who and Jack Black.

Speaking to Jian Ghomeshi, Lord Lloyd Webber said he would like to continue writing a variety of musicals.

"I don't write because I think I've got to write another musical. I just enjoy doing it," he added.

The composer also revealed his next production will be called Stephen Ward and is based on the so-called Profumo Affair - a 1963 British political scandal.

"I will go from Stephen Ward which is going to be really a sort of a chamber musical to a musical about kids playing the guitar," he said.
