Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the Golden Globe awards for a second consecutive year. The comedy duo won big laughs with jokes about George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep.

Jennifer Lawrence was the first winner of the night, receiving the award for best supporting actress in a comedy or musical for her role in American Hustle. The 23-year-old received a best actress prize at last year's ceremony.

Jennifer Lawrence's American Hustle co-star Amy Adams was also honoured for her role in the 1970s crime yarn, picking up the award for best actress in a film comedy or musical.

Cate Blanchett (left) won the prize for best actress in a film drama, beating Sandra Bullock (centre), Dame Judi Dench, Emma Thompson (right) and Kate Winslet in the process.

The best actor in a drama category saw Britain's Chiwetel Ejiofor (l) and Matthew McConaughey pitted against Idris Elba, Tom Hanks and Robert Redford. McConaughey (r) won out for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.

Leonardo DiCaprio (l), pictured here with Bradley Cooper, was named best actor in a film comedy or musical for The Wolf of Wall Street.

Martin Scorsese's Wall Street satire had been nominated for best film comedy or musical but lost out to American Hustle - the biggest winner at this year's event.

12 Years a Slave won the top honour of the night, best film drama. It was the only trophy the film won, despite being nominated for seven awards.

U2 won best original song for their track Ordinary Love, featured over the end credits of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

The Irish band beat songs by Coldplay and Taylor Swift to win the award, the only prize won by the Nelson Mandela biopic.

Bryan Cranston finally collected a Golden Globe for his role in Breaking Bad, having been nominated in the best actor in a drama series category every year since 2011. Breaking Bad was also named best TV drama.

Jacqueline Bisset was one of the few British winners on the night, picking up best supporting actress in a TV series, mini-series or TV movie for her part in BBC drama Dancing on the Edge. Elisabeth Moss won the best actress prize for another BBC drama, Top of the Lake.

Moss's win came at the expense of Dame Helen Mirren and Jessica Lange, who were nominated in the same category for their roles in HBO TV movie and American Horror Story: Coven.
