Happy Valley up for three Royal Television Society awards

A second series of Happy Valley is due to air later this year

BBC One crime thriller Happy Valley has landed three Royal Television Society (RTS) nominations.

It will vie for best drama series with BBC Two's Peaky Blinders and Line of Duty.

Sarah Lancashire, who plays police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, is up for best actress.

Its writer, Sally Wainwright, competes in the best drama writing category. Comedy show Harry and Paul's Story of the Twos is also up for three awards.

The BBC Two programme will compete in the scripted comedy, comedy performance (Harry Enfield) and writer (Charlie Higson) categories.

Lancashire is up against Georgina Campbell (Murdered By My Boyfriend) and Sheridan Smith (Cilla) in the female actor category.

BBC Three's Murdered By My Boyfriend, based on the true story of a young woman who falls for a man who eventually takes her life, is also in the running for best single drama, alongside BBC Two's Marvellous and BBC One's Common.

Common, about the controversial concept of joint enterprise murder, also sees its creator Jimmy McGovern up for a writing award.

This year's best male actor contenders are Adeel Akhtar for Channel 4's Utopia; Toby Jones for Marvellous; and Tom Hollander for his role as Dylan Thomas in A Poet in New York.

Graham Norton is up for two awards - best entertainment programme for The Graham Norton Show, and entertainment performance.

Artist Grayson Perry is also up for best presenter for Channel 4's Grayson Perry: Who Are You?, which is also in contention for best arts programme.

The best entertainment hopefuls are Sky One's A League of Their Own, ITV's Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and ITV 2's Keith Lemon - Celebrity Juice.

Casualty, Coronation Street and EastEnders compete in the soap and continuing drama category.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, Sky Sports' Gary Neville and the BBC's multi-tasking Hazel Irvine are nominated in the best sports presenter, commentator or pundit category.

The centenary of the start of World War One is also reflected with four nominations for programmes about this historic milestone.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 17 March at the Grosvenor House in London.
