Former Oasis member Noel Gallagher has been pitched into another battle with the band's old rival Blur thanks to the nominations for this year's Q Awards.

Both Blur's The Magic Whip and Chasing Yesterday, by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds band, are in the running for the event's best album prize.

Gallagher's post-Oasis group is up for three awards in all, as are Florence and The Machine, Foals and Ed Sheeran.

The awards, to be decided by public vote, will be held on 19 October.

Blur and Oasis famously went head to head in 1995 when the former's Country House single and the latter's Roll With It track were released the same week.

On that occasion Blur, fronted by singer Damon Albarn, outsold Oasis, fronted by Gallagher and his brother Liam, by 58,000 copies.

Blur and High Flying Birds are also nominated for the "best act in the world today" prize, as are Foals - named best live act at last year's awards.

Gallagher's third nomination comes in the best solo artist category, where his fellow nominees include Sheeran, Sam Smith and Taylor Swift.

Matt Mason, Q magazine's senior editor, said the nominations, external "represent the very best talent from another inventive and exciting year for music".

Absolute Radio's Christian O'Connell will host the awards for the second year running.
