Hip hop musical Hamilton picked up 11 awards at the Tony Awards in New York on Sunday. The cast also performed at the ceremony. For the first time, all four musical acting winners were black.

Londoner Cynthia Erivo picked up the coveted award for best leading actress in a musical for her role in The Color Purple.

Jessie Mueller and the cast of Waitress also performed on stage - the musical, about a woman who dreams of opening her own pie shop, got four nominations.

Daveed Diggs was one of the Hamilton winners, honoured with the award for best actor in a featured role in a musical. In the show, Diggs takes on the dual roles of Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette.

Singer Gloria Estefan performed a medley of her hits with the cast of the Broadway musical On Your Feet, which is based on the lives of herself and husband Emilio Estefan.

Host James Corden posed with his wife Julia Carey on the red carpet ahead of the ceremony. Corden referred to the Orlando nightclub victims at the start of the show: "You are not on your own right now, your tragedy is our tragedy."

Star Wars actress Lupita Nyong'o was nominated for best actress in a play for her role in Eclipse, about five women who are brought together by upheaval in their homeland, Liberia.

Glenn Close and Lord Lloyd-Webber were among the attendees at the event which took place at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan.

Cate Blanchett also made an appearance. She will be making her Broadway debut this year in the play The Present.

Oprah Winfrey sported a 'geek chic' look as she spoke at the ceremony. She produced the revival of musical The Color Purple.

Comic actor Steve Martin entertained the crowd with the cast of Bright Star, the musical he created with singer songwriter Edie Brickell.
