Leonard Cohen was a published poet and novelist before achieving worldwide fame during the folk music revival of the 1960s.

The Canadian, seen here during a break in his British tour in December 1979, was the writer of such songs as Suzanne and Bird on a Wire.

Cohen, pictured here in Toronto in 2006, was known for his quiet, melancholy reflections on lost and flawed love. Alongside Chuck Berry, Cohen was honoured at the 2012 Awards for Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence in Boston, Massachusetts.

He received the Glenn Gould Prize in Toronto in 2012 for his lifetime contribution to the arts. Hallelujah, his most famous song, has been covered hundreds of times since he released it in 1984, by such artists as American singer Jeff Buckley and X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

In 2013, Cohen performed at the opening night of the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

The singer toured extensively from 2008 to 2013 after he was unable to collect money from a $9m (£7.1m) judgment against a former manager accused of draining his savings.

In October this year, Cohen released an album, You Want It Darker, with this photo on the cover.
