NHS England faces cap on NHS agency staff costs

A government cap on what NHS hospitals in England can spend on agency nurses and doctors has come into effect.

By April, NHS trusts will not be able to pay agency staff, such as doctors and nurses, more than 55% more for a shift than they would pay a permanent member of staff for working the same hours.

The latest figures show NHS trusts in England spent £1.9bn on locum staff in just three months this summer.
