Prince William and his newly titled bride, the Duchess of Cambridge, kissed on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after their wedding at Westminster Abbey.
The newly-weds then left Buckingham Palace, with Prince William driving his father's classic Aston Martin car down the Mall.
Earlier in the day, crowds had cheered as they caught their first glimpse of Kate Middleton and her much-anticipated dress as she travelled to the abbey with her proud father, Michael.
Miss Middleton walked down the aisle of the abbey on her father's arm. According to a lip-reading expert, Prince William told his bride she looked "beautiful" as she joined him at the altar.
Some 1,900 guests witnessed the couple exchange their vows, with many millions more watching on TV around the world.
Prince William and and his new bride knelt at the altar of the abbey to receive a blessing from the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Miss Middleton's gown, with full skirt, fitted bodice and long French Chantilly lace sleeves, was designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen.
The tiara was loaned to the bride by the Queen.
And the train was 2.7m long.
There were wild screams as Princes William and Harry emerged, resplendent in their military uniforms, ahead of the wedding.
Prince William acknowledged well-wishers as he entered the abbey.
Miss Middleton's sister and maid of honour Pippa arrived with the young bridesmaids and page boys.
And the Queen, wearing a matching hat and coat, entered the abbey to a trumpet fanfare from the State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry.
The Princess Royal and other members of the Royal Family gathered ahead of the service.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall waved to the waiting crowds.
Along the wedding route, military bands helped keep the crowds entertained in central London.
Thousands of people had camped out overnight, hoping to find a good spot to see the royal couple.
There were 5,000 police officers on duty, with more than 900 along the wedding route. Most were in uniform, but some were in plain clothes, mixing with the crowd.
More than 600,000 people were expected to line the streets.
Many wore colourful hats and carried flags.
Others had decorated their faces.
The first of the guests started to arrive at Westminster Abbey at 0815 BST, with the ceremony getting under way at 1100.
David and Victoria Beckham were among those invited.
